TGIF (29): Reading Blues

I'm back to do TGIF, again. Haven't done this since last year! Yeah, I know, it's been a while. Anyway, TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads!

Reading Blues: We all get them from time to time. What helps you overcome those reading slumps when nothing seems to grab your attention?

Ahh, these reading slumps. I'm going through one right now, actually. I recently finished Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris and then tried to read another book, but things didn't work out that well. Now I'm currently reading, or trying to read, A Temptation of Angels, but things aren't going that well. I've been trying to get through one chapter during a whole week!

What I usually do is that, I take my time. Keep trying to read and if it just doesn't work then don't read for a couple of days. Just put reading aside for a couple of days and believe me, of you're an avid reader like me then you will miss it and then get back to it! I know that this always work for me, but you can always try it.

Let me know what you think! And don't forget to enter my current Blogoversary Giveaway here!

Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris

Unraveling
Elizabeth Norris

Release Date: April 24th, 2012
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 445
Source: ARC from publisher (Thank you so much Shannon!)

Two days before the start of her junior year, seventeen-year-old Janelle Tenner is hit by a pickup truck and killed—as in blinding light, scenes of her life flashing before her, and then nothing. Except the next thing she knows, she's opening her eyes to find Ben Michaels, a loner from her high school whom Janelle has never talked to, leaning over her. And even though it isn't possible, she knows—with every fiber of her being—that Ben has somehow brought her back to life.

But her revival, and Ben's possible role in it, is only the first of the puzzles that Janelle must solve. While snooping in her FBI agent father's files for clues about her accident, she uncovers a clock that seems to be counting down to something—but to what? And when someone close to Janelle is killed, she can no longer deny what's right in front of her: Everything that's happened—the accident, the murder, the countdown clock, Ben's sudden appearance in her life—points to the end of life as she knows it. And as the clock ticks down, she realizes that if she wants to put a stop to the end of the world, she's going to need to uncover Ben's secrets—and keep from falling in love with him in the process.

From debut author Elizabeth Norris comes this shattering novel of one girl's fight to save herself, her world, and the boy she never saw coming.

My Thoughts:

I have to say that Unraveling has made it to one of my all-time favourite list! The story is absolutely action-packed and filled with turns and surprises. I set my expectations very high and still I'm shocked of how much the book turned out to be better then what I thought it would be!

The story takes of with the reader being introduced to Janelle Tenner, who's not having the best day of her life. She gets hit by a truck when she's on her way to pick her brother up, and dies. No, really. She dies, only to find Ben Michaels bringing her back from death. Now she's determined to find out what really happened and trying to connect everything together to stop a mysterious countdown. And that, my friends, is just the beginning.

Janelle was a strong female protagonist and I really enjoyed reading the story from her point of view. I felt like I could relate to what she was going through, without actually having to experience it (which shows what a great writer Ms. Norris is). I also liked Ben. He was quite "the boy" for Janelle. Seriously, they were perfect for each other, I will say that much.

I loved Ms. Norris writing, like mentioned above! She's very talented and I really, really, really hope that there will be some sort of a sequel to this. Even though we are left in the middle of nowhere, I feel like Ms. Norris ends the book right where it should end. But if there isn't a sequel, then that's just some torture right there.

Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins

Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3)
Rachel Hawkins

Release Date: March 13th, 2012
Publisher: Hyperion Book CH
Pages: 327
Source: Borrowed

(SYNOPSIS INCLUDES SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ THE PREVIOUS BOOKS!)
Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

My Thoughts:

“Whoa, I'm your girlfriend now?"
Archer shrugged. "We've tried to kill each other, fought ghouls, and kissed a lot. I'm pretty sure we're married in some cultures.”
The Hex Hall series is one of my favourites and I think Spell Bound is a perfect way to end it, although it is so sad that this is the end! I love Ms. Hawkins writing, it is simply hilarious and so enjoyable!

I'll keep this review spoiler-free, Sophie is a super-funny character and I'm so glad the the story is written in her point of view and I also enjoyed reading about the rest of the crew, Jenna, Archer and Cal. Now I'll be honest, my favourite character has to be Cal. He is sooo sweet!
I'm definitely interested in what Ms. Hawkins will dig into next and I really recommend this series to anyone who hasn't read it yet!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

Incarnate (New Soul #1)
Jodi Meadows

Release Date: January 31st, 2012
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages: 384
Source: Borrowed

New soul
Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.
No soul
Even Ana's own mother thinks she's a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she'll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?
Heart
Sam believes Ana's new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana's enemies--human and creature alike--let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else's life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?
Jodi Meadows expertly weaves soul-deep romance, fantasy, and danger into an extraordinary tale of new life.

My Thoughts:

Incarnate was so different than I expected it to be. It was also great, let's not forget that! It is such a unique story and Ms. Meadows has created a beautiful, but different kind of world and I really enjoyed her writing.

Ana is a nosoul. She has only been born once, unlike all of the people around her. In a world where everyone has existed for a couple of thousands of years, Ana is not treated fairly by anyone. Until the days she turns eighteen and decides that she needs to know why she's different. On the way she meets Sam and the rest is for you to explore.

I really liked Ana, she was so calm and excepted the fact that she's different. I felt sorry for her, though. Everyone was so cruel and mean to her. Exception; Sam and his friends. I liked Sam. He was very nice to Ana and helped her. Ms. Meadows developed the story in a great pace and I can't wait for the second book!

I loved the movie and I'm considering to go watch it again! The setting was perfect and everything was just like I imagined it! Now I won't spoil anything for those who have not watched it, so here below are a few sneek-peeks:

The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg

The Catastrophic History of You and Me
Jess Rothenberg

Release Date: February 21st, 2012
Publisher: Penguin Young Readers Group
Pages: 400
Source: Borrowed

Dying of a broken heart is just the beginning.... Welcome to forever.

BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.

But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.

With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces?

My Thoughts:

“Love is no game. People cut their tears off over this stuff. People jump off the Eiffel Tower and sell all their possessions and move to Alaska to live with the grizzly bears, and they get eaten and nobody hears them when they scream for help. That's right. Falling in love is pretty much the same thing as being eaten alive by a grizzly bear.”

I adored this book! It was absolutely amazing and I enjoyed every single word of it! It had me laughing, thinking, smiling, being mad and going all emotional. Yes. I experienced many different feelings while reading The Catastrophic History of You and Me.

I loved reading the story from Brie's point of view. She was very funny and was laughing out loud at her sarcasm. Brie had her heart broken (literally) when her boyfriend, Jacob, tells her that he doesn't live her anymore. While trying to find "peace" she gets to know this dead guy and together they start to figure out why Jacob didn't love her. I really liked Patrick. He was so adorable and helped Brie through tough times.

I really liked Ms. Rothenberg's writing! The ending for the story was perfect. It ended right where it should have and you get to understand everything. The Catastrophic History of You and Me is an amazing read and it really has you thinking. Deep thoughts. This is definitely a must-read!

Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne

Harbinger
Sara Wilson Etienne

Release Date: February 2nd, 2012
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons BYR
Pages: 309
Source: Borrowed

Plagued by waking visions and nightmares, inexplicably drawn to the bones of dead animals, Faye thinks she's going crazy. Fast. Her parents beleive Holbrook Academy might just be the solution. Dr. Mordoch tells her it's the only answer. But Faye knows that something's not quite right about Dr. Mordoch and her creepy, prisonlike school for disturbed teenagers.

What's wrong with Holbrook goes beyond the Takers, sadistic guards who threaten the student body with Tasers and pepper spray; or Nurse, who doles out pills at bedtime and doses of solitary confinement when kids step out of line; or Rita, the strange girl who delivers ominous messages to Faye that never seem to make any sense. What's wrong with Holbrook begins and ends with Faye's red hands; she and her newfound friends--her Holbrook "family"--wake up every morning with their hands stained the terrible brown of dried blood. Faye has no idea what it means but fears she may be the cause.

Because despite the strangeness of Holbrook and the island on which it sits, Faye feels oddly connected to the place; she feels especially linked to the handsome Kel, who helps her unravel the mystery. There's just one problem: Faye's certain Kel's trying to kill her--and maybe the rest of the world, too.

A rich and tautly told psychological thriller, Harbinger heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice in young adult fiction.

My Thoughts:

I've been very excited to read Harbinger from all of the mixed reviews. I'll be honest, I reeeaaally tried to like this book, but it just wasn't for me.

Harbinger was so dark and myserious and I did finish it. I liked the ending and thought it was a good conclusion to the story. Some parts were confusing and I didn't understand them. One things that I really did enjoy was Ms. Etienne's writing. It was captivating and had it's own flow.

I'm really interested in what Ms. Etienne is digging into next and I think that everyone should read Harbinger and then see what they think.

Someone Else's Life by Katie Dale

Someone Else's Life
Katie Dale

Release Date: February 14th, 2012
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Pages: 464
Source: Borrowed

When 17-year-old Rosie's mother, Trudie, dies from Huntington's Disease, her pain is intensified by the knowledge that she has a fifty percent chance of inheriting the crippling disease herself. Only when Rosie tells her mother's best friend, "Aunt Sarah," that she is going to test for the disease does Sarah, a midwife, reveal that Trudie wasn't her real mother after all. Rosie was swapped at birth with a sickly baby who was destined to die.
Devastated, Rosie decides to trace her real mother, joining her ex-boyfriend on his gap year travels, to find her birth mother in California. But all does not go as planned. As Rosie discovers yet more of her family's deeply buried secrets and lies, she is left with an agonizing decision of her own, one which will be the most heart breaking and far-reaching of all.

My Thoughts:

Someone Else's Life was such a strong and emotional book. It held a powerful meaning and I really enjoyed reading it. The story was very realistic and Ms. Dale's writing was very nice and was definitely contributed to the book.

Rose's mother dies from Hunington's disease, when Rose learns a truth she never expected. Trudie isn't her biological mother. That's a start of a journey that will hopefully lead Rose to her mother and find her real family, but she must also face a couple of obstacles.

I really enjoyed reading Someone Else's Life, mainly, because the story was from different point of views. I really liked the main character, Rose. She was very thoughtful, even though at some points I just got SO annoyed at her. The thing that I didn't like was that she suddenly just forgot the persons that were there for her from the beginning when she meets the  people that she thinks "love" her.

The story developed at such a perfect pace and I felt like it ended where it should have, no surprises or anything, because you would have had enough of them by the time the ending rolls by. No, seriously. I had to take "reading-breaks" from all of the information that was stuffed in to us and all of the confusion..Yeah, you got it.

I loved Someone Else's Life and I recommend it anyone and everyone, because you won't be disappointed!

Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters by Meredith Zeitlin

Freshman Year and Other Unnatural Disasters
Meredith Zeitlin

Release Date: March 1st, 2012
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons
Pages: 288
Source: ARC from publisher (Thank you so much!)

Kelsey Finkelstein is fourteen and FRUSTRATED. Every time she tries to live up to her awesome potential, her plans are foiled – by her impossible parents, her annoying little sister, and life in general. But with her first day of high school coming up, Kelsey is positive that things are going to change. Enlisting the help of her three best friends — sweet and quiet Em, theatrical Cass, and wild JoJo — Kelsey gets ready to rebrand herself and make the kind of mark she knows is her destiny.

Things start out great - her arch-nemesis has moved across the country, giving Kelsey the perfect opportunity to stand out on the soccer team and finally catch the eye of her long-time crush. But soon enough, an evil junior’s thirst for revenge, a mysterious photographer, and a series of other catastrophes make it clear that just because KELSEY has a plan for greatness… it doesn’t mean the rest of the world is in on it.

Kelsey’s hilarious commentary throughout her disastrous freshman year will have you laughing out loud—while being thankful that you’re not in her shoes, of course…

My Thoughts:

This book was absolutely hilarious! I laughed so, so much and Kelsey and her friends were definitely relateable! I really enjoyed Ms. Zeitlin's writing and her humour.

Kelsey was definitely a great main character. She was hilarious and some things, I could relate to, and others were just "shaking my head (and smiling)"-ish. Kelsey was a normal fourteen-year-old that worried about ridiculous things, with some nice sarcasm on the top. Then about the romance...I didn't like Jordan, but Ben, I did. I mean, seriously. Seriously. Ben was definitely sweet and so nice!
I also liked Kelsey's friends, they were understanding and was there for her.

This is a must-read. Ms. Zeitlin will keep you entertained until the end, and just when you think the disasters are over, a surprise pops up! Definitely a great read for readers that are looking for something sweet and funny!
